Donald E. Smoker, 60, of Howe, died unexpectedly on Friday, July 9, 2010 at his residence. He was a 1967 Sturgis High School graduate who excelled in Athletics. He was a Navy Veteran who served his country during the Vietnam War. Donald retired from Ross Labs in Sturgis, Mich., where he worked in the shipping and receiving department. He was a past Deacon of the Lima Presbyterian Church in Howe, supported the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid Notre Dame fan. He was born on July 27, 1949 in Battle Creek, Mich., to Donald F. and Patricia A. (Stewart) Smoker. On May 24, 1969 he married Julie Thomae at the Lima Presbyterian Church in Howe, Ind. She survives in Howe. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Chris Smoker of Howe, Ind., and Matt and Alexis Smoker of Sturgis, Mich., a granddaughter, (who was the love of his life) Rachel Olivia Smoker and a brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Kelly Smoker of Lima, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Terry Smoker. According to his wishes cremation will take place and there will be a graveside service held at Riverside Cemetery in Howe, Ind. at a later date.
